Mugler Perfume & Women's Fragrance
Thierry Mugler is an esteemed designer and perfumer creator. He is known for being controversial and this is as true for his fashion collections as it is for his extensive range of perfumes. Any project that Mugler embarks on, whether it be fashion or fragrance, is always carried out with the utmost commitment, loyalty to his fans and disregard for what others may think. Mugler has been a contentious character on the fashion circuit since his very first designs – love it or hate it, you can guarantee that his style doesn't leave anyone indifferent.
Mugler moved to Paris in his mid 20's after studying ballet and travelling the Middle East. He managed to find work as a freelance designer. It was during this time he began to really experiment with design, creating a large variety of ready-to-wear collections for fashion houses in Paris as well as Milan, London and Barcelona. In 1973 Mugler created his first independent clothing collection for women called 'Cafe de Paris. Following the success of his first collection and with help from Melka Treanton, Thierry Mugler successfully launched his career as a women's fashion designer and soon to be fragrance and perfume creator.
His first perfume, Thierry Mugler Angel, was introduced in 1992 and caused a huge frenzy as it was one of the first of its kind – a gourmand fragrance. This is a scent which is based on edible ingredients. Apart from the occasional dash of vanilla or chocolate this practice was unheard of in fine perfumery at the time. Angel is based on powerfully sweet notes of vanilla, dark chocolate and caramel and is perhaps one of the most recognisable scents in the world. Mugler’s Angel perfume has been hugely influential since its release and continues to be one of the designer’s most popular fragrances.
Unlike a lot of other perfume creators, Mugler is very specific about when and if he is to launch a new fragrance and refuses to be defined or pressured by the mass market. It was a whole 13 years after the success of Angel that Mugler decided once again to challenge the perfume world with his second women's scent. The designer’s Alien perfume once again made a huge impact with a potent combination of white floral notes, woods and amber. Just like Angel, Alien is an instantly recognizable scent. It spreads a powerful aura which blooms for hours and develops from icy floral to woody amber. The scent comes in an enigmatic bottle of purple glass and metal that resembles nothing else. Alien was an enormous success and has been released in a myriad of new versions, including the limited Alien Les Parfums De Cuir, which is made through a delicate process where the raw perfume is soaked in natural leather for weeks, creating a fascinating infusion.
The third Thierry Mugler scent, Womanity, was released a whopping 18 years after the success of Angel and 5 extraordinary years after Alien and is a scent that thrills the senses with a salutation of femininity. The word Womanity was made up by Mugler as a combination of his inspirations for the scent: women, humanity and the city. Womanity has captured the hearts of the female population worldwide with its unique combination of savoury, sweet and salty notes.
These days Mugler's perfumes are probably more famous than his fashion creations and he continues to astound us with his creations for both men and women. This doesn’t mean that he gave up on fashion after the success of fragrances however. In 1993 he created the famous little black dress that was worn by Demi Moore in Indecent Proposal, in 2002 he collaborated with Cirque du Soleil and created all the costumes and the identity of the characters in the show and in 2009 Mugler worked as an artistic advisor to the singer Beyonce, creating the costumes for her 'I Am......World Tour'.
